I’m a Barbie girl
in the Barbie world
Life in plastic
It’s fantastic
Barbie’s world is pink, free of illness, war and crises. Each cog in the machine snuggles up to the next, revolving together in the name of pervasive perfection. This is a fairy tale universe, a refuge for women, for children, for everybody. But how sturdy is this construction?
In his variant version of Ibsen’s „A Doll’s House”; Emre Akal moves the action from Norway to the world of Barbie and Ken. What would Nora’s world be like if she could create it herself just like Barbie? As Barbie, she is successful, talented and vibrantly healthy. She stands at the center of her own “utopian” cosmos. Everything is truly fantastic, but when a dark secret from her past life comes to light, the whole system starts to crumble.
Director Emre Akal and his team work in a fascinatingly visual language that blurs the line between analog and virtual reality. Emre Akal is an award-winning writer and director. His productions are a weave of choreography, installation and visual composition. They were shown at Bakirköy in Istanbul, Kammerspiele in Munich and Schauspielhaus in Graz, among others. In 2019, he was a founding member of the Ayse X Staatstheater as an alternative to the institutionalized theatre landscape. The project researches the possibilities of a new intersectional and diversified theatre practice.
